Hi Bashmohandes, thank you so much for all that giving to the community. I have a question regarding a career path choice I have 2 offers 1 as MLE at apple it is RO from internship last summer the team is great but I am not really sure about the rumors of layoffs nowadays and I feel also and the other one which is doing phd in famous lab in Zurich. It is kind of hard to choose but I feel doing phd will be norm in 3-5 years and have a pretty good opportunities— if published good papers. while the other one I feel I may be fall behind.

I wouldn’t choose the PhD just because you think it might become the norm in 3–5 years.

If you actually want research, enjoy the topic deeply, and would be happy spending years pushing on open problems with a real chance that the outcome depends a lot on paper quality and advisor/lab fit, then the Zurich PhD can be a great path.

But if your hesitation is mostly fear of layoffs or fear of “falling behind”, then I’d lean toward the Apple MLE role.

Layoffs are kind of a fact of life in the industry now, so I wouldn’t treat that as a reason to avoid a role you genuinely want. You can’t optimize your life around rumors forever. What matters more is staying market relevant, learning well, and building strong real experience.

And generally speaking, I’m biased toward industry experience over doing a PhD defensively. A good industry role compounds a lot: shipping, working with strong teams, production systems, scope, judgment, and a clearer sense of what problems are actually worth solving.

So my simple framing would be:

• Pick the PhD if you want the PhD itself.
• Pick the MLE role if the PhD is mainly a hedge.

From how you wrote the question, it sounds like the PhD is attractive partly because it feels safer or more prestigious, not necessarily because you’re excited about the day to day of research. If that read is correct, I’d take the MLE offer.
